Bonuses at foreign casinos: wagering, maximum stake and loyalty

Foreign casinos carry the biggest bonuses and the heaviest conditions. A bonus of 150 % is not 150 % more to play with: it is a loan that has to be turned over 35 times before it becomes yours. Here is how to do the arithmetic, and when you are better off without.
The bonus is the first thing a foreign casino shows you, and the last thing standing in the way of a withdrawal. On the board of foreign casinos bonuses earn no points, because they say nothing about whether you get your money. But they decide when you are allowed to take it.
The wagering requirement: the arithmetic
The wagering requirement is the number of times the bonus has to be played through before it can be withdrawn. The arithmetic is simple:

Look at the third row. If the terms say «bonus plus deposit», the figure doubles. That is one of the details that rarely appears on the front page.
With a typical slot return of about 96 %, you lose on average 4 % of every stake. On 35,000 kr. in stakes that is 1,400 kr., more than the bonus itself. That is the average; a few win, most do not.
Three rules hiding in the bonus terms
- Maximum stake. While the bonus is live you can usually stake only a set amount per spin. Stake more and the casino can cancel the bonus and the winnings.
- Game contribution. Slots often count 100 %, table games and live casino far less or not at all. Play blackjack with a live bonus and the requirement may not move.
- A deadline. The requirement has to be met within a set number of days. Otherwise the bonus disappears.
Vave's welcome package as an example

Big percentages, the same mathematics
BetFury advertises «up to 590 %» on its front page. A big number says nothing about what the bonus is worth to you: that is decided by the requirement, the stake cap and how much of the bonus your deposit can actually unlock. An «up to» nearly always means the full amount takes several deposits or a particular tier.
Offers without a deposit
Free spins or a small amount handed over without a deposit sound like money for nothing. In practice they arrive with the harshest requirements and a low cap on winnings, often a few hundred kroner. They are good for seeing a casino from the inside before you deposit. They are bad at making money, and they should not be the reason you pick a casino.
Loyalty: what actually gives something back
If you play regularly, a loyalty programme is often worth more than the welcome bonus. Cashback returns a percentage of your net loss, rakeback a share of the house edge on every stake. That gives something back every session, not only the first, and the conditions are rarely on the same scale as a welcome bonus.

When you are better off without a bonus
- When you want to make a trial withdrawal. A live bonus locks it.
- When you want to play table games or live casino, which do not count.
- When you have neither the time nor the appetite to turn the bonus over 35 times.
Switch the bonus off in the cashier before you deposit; many casinos turn it on automatically. And if you cannot find the bonus terms at all, read the warning signs.
