What is a foreign casino, and what changes for you as a player?
Before you choose · the idea and the differences
«Foreign casino» covers everything from well-run crypto houses to sites that disappear with your balance. The only thing they share is that the licence comes from another country. Here is what that means in practice: for the account, for the bonus and for the money.
On our board of foreign casinos stand thirteen casinos licensed in Curaçao or Anjouan. On the surface they resemble each other: a dark front page, a big bonus, slots from the same studios. The differences sit in what the front page does not show, and those are what this page is about.
The licence comes from another country
A foreign casino is an online casino whose gambling licence was issued outside Denmark. The licence says who granted the permission, which company stands behind it, and which domain it covers. The two most widespread licensors among foreign crypto casinos are:
- The Curaçao Gaming Authority. Licence numbers of the form OGL/2024/1494/0942. The register at cert.cga.cw shows the domain, the company, the licence number and a status (Active or not), but no expiry date.
- Anjouan. Licence numbers of the form ALSI-202602030-FI2. The register shows the company and a date the licence is valid until.
A licence is not a guarantee of quality. It is a name and a number you can look up, and that is more than many casinos in the advertising can live up to. How you do it is in check a casino licence.
The account: email first, documents later
At many foreign casinos you open an account with an email address and a password in a minute. There is no MitID login and no paperwork at the door. That sounds convenient, and it is, right up until you want to withdraw.
Verification has not gone away; it has simply moved. It usually arrives at one of three moments:
- At the first withdrawal. Rakebit asks for a selfie and proof of address the first time you take money out.
- Above a threshold. Bitcasino.io can ask for extra verification on withdrawals above 2,500 EUR.
- Whenever the casino chooses. Bitsler and Wild Fortune reserve the right to ask for documents at their own discretion, and Vave can ask for them before a withdrawal with a 14-day deadline.
What matters is not whether a casino asks for documents. What matters is whether it is written down, so you know in advance. If it is nowhere, you do not know what happens once you have won.
The money: crypto instead of kroner
Nearly every foreign casino we checked is a crypto casino. The cashier shows addresses for bitcoin, USDT, Ethereum and a handful of other coins. Danish kroner cannot be sent directly.
That means an extra stop along the way: you buy crypto for kroner on an exchange and send it onward. On the way back you do the reverse. That makes two fees, one choice of network and a risk of sending to the wrong address. In exchange, a withdrawal in crypto does not pass a bank that has to approve it. The whole road from kroner to the casino and back is in from kroner to crypto.
The bonuses: bigger numbers, heavier conditions
A foreign casino typically offers larger percentages than a Danish one: 150 %, 200 %, «up to 590 %». The numbers are bigger because the conditions are. A wagering requirement of 35 or 40 times is ordinary, and while the bonus is live the withdrawal is locked and the stake per spin is often capped.
That does not make the bonus worthless, but it is a loan with conditions, not a gift. Many players would be better off without: deposit, play, withdraw. How to do the arithmetic on a bonus, and why loyalty programmes are often worth more, is in bonuses at foreign casinos.
Language and support
Most foreign casinos are in English, some carry a machine-translated Danish version. Support runs through a chat window, often around the clock, rarely in Danish. The terms are almost always in English only, and it is those that apply, not what the chat says. If the chat gives you an answer that conflicts with the terms, take a screenshot, but expect the terms to win.
What makes a foreign casino a good choice
A foreign casino is a sensible choice when you can answer yes to five questions before you deposit:
| Question | Where you find the answer |
|---|---|
| Does the register show the licence as valid? | cert.cga.cw or the Anjouan register |
| Does the certificate name the domain you play on? | The same lookup |
| Do the terms say when they ask for documents? | Terms, the section on the account or withdrawals |
| Is there a maximum for withdrawals? | Terms, the section on withdrawals |
| Is Denmark outside the list of excluded countries? | Terms, the section on countries |
Those are the five checks we run on the board. If you cannot answer the last three, start with a trial withdrawal before you put anything larger in.
What makes a foreign casino a bad choice
Some signs are worth taking seriously however big the bonus is: a licence logo that links to no register, a certificate carrying another domain, terms that do not mention withdrawals at all, and a chat that answers «it is being processed» with no deadline. The full list is in warning signs.
